Social media appointments are made by professionals who offer to store other people’s belongings for 50% or less in their rented premises. Anish Bakshi, who posted on Facebook about one of these safes in Gurughram, said the idea is to help people who are forced to pay the full rent for their room in Gurugram, even if they don’t live here anymore, because most organizations give work from home (either as an option or as a mandate). We offer storage space in our apartments. I usually received requests from single people who wanted to move to their place of residence or who had already moved.
Anamika Manhas, 22, marketing manager at Gurughram, shares her experiences, she says: I could not move to a new house and there was a lot of pressure from the family to return to my hometown Jammu. I flew in two days before closing time. I’ve been here for three months, all my stuff is in the rented apartment, and the notice period has expired as well. I wasn’t physically able to come to change, do the dishes, and so on. So when I heard about this service, I knew it was very useful. I’ve paid about ₹4,000 a month and all my stuff is safe.

The rent is enormous if I don’t use the room, but still have to pay the rent. My stuff was in the house (fridge, washing machine, etc.). Initially we had a conversation with the landlord about a reduction in the rent that I would have to pay, but the landlords did not agree to a reduction in the rent. The only other option is to find a camp and bring our stuff there. I asked the moving and packing companies for help, and a friend helped me, too. And now that the landlord saw us go, he thought he had lost a regular income, so he offered to cut the rent by 40% until we got back!

Anyone renting storage space ensures that all essential information is shared well in advance of space allocation. Kovid Ummat, an advertising expert who rents two rooms as storage, said security is also a concern. We guarantee that the other party and I will provide all details in advance. Somewhere out of our own misery came when one of my roommates went to Agra for solitary confinement. And when we got home, we realized we didn’t know when the WFH would end. The rent could have been completely avoided at the time. So we thought about taking our stuff out and bringing it to camp, and we found out there wasn’t that much. This allowed us to open two rooms for the people who needed this place. It’s about equal opportunities for all. There are people like us who don’t want to spend something like ₹30.000 as a monthly rent if they don’t even live in these places.
